.Best Artsy House and Gallery Space

There are many spectacular stopping points in Marin County—this place, with its rolling gold hills, sparkling blue waters and rambling green oak trees, attracts human brilliance of all kinds.

One such a wonder was the late JB (James Blain) Blunk, a sculptor originally from Kansas who built and lived in a home in Inverness until his death in 2002.

Blunk’s work is a harmonious interaction between human and nature. His most well-known work, The Planet, is carved from a single redwood root system and can be found at the Oakland Museum of California.

Blunk’s legacy is honored by the Blunk Space, a research center and exhibition space dedicated to perpetuating Blunk’s artistic mission. The space is a hub of contemporary art and is located at 11101 CA-1, #105, Point Reyes Station.

The house, a redwood and riverstone liveable art space which can be viewed by appointment, is something every local and visitor should experience. There is a peace amongst the natural texture of the house; each feature is so tenderly and intuitively shaped, it would seem nature intended it so. A tranquility not easily located in today’s world can be found here.

When next in Point Reyes, stop in to Blunk Space to view the current exhibition, have a coffee and freshly baked pastry across the street at Toby’s Coffee Bar, and view the house, if you’ve planned ahead.
